Mamata, the Good Samaritan

CALCUTTA: A driver of a cab was killed after it fell into a ditch but four of its injured passengers came out of the nullah holding the hand of Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee at Pagladah in South 24 Parganas district on Thursday. Banerjee, in a car on way to an election meeting, rushed out of her vehicle on witnessing the accident, immediately called for help and led a team of local boys to rescue the passengers. Later she gave Rs 500 to a boy who dived into the water to lift out the injured.

7 TDP supporters killed in mishap

HYDERABAD: Seven Telugu Desam party (TDP) supporters were killed and 25 others injured, 15 of them seriously, when the dumper in which they were travelling overturned near Islamanyampalle in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh yesterday. According to police, the victims were going to Hindupur to participate in the nomination filing programme of the TDP candidate C C Venkataramudu.

NC leader resigns, joinsJKPDP

SRINAGAR: Ruling National Conference leader from Ganderbal, Qazi Mohammad Afzal has resigned from the party and joined Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party led by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. `There was no place for those who try to air grievances of the common man', Afzal said.
