VMC wins vehicles case
The VMC seized eight matadors on Thursday for evading octroi after the persons concerned lost a case in the local court. Dy Municipal Commissioner (General) I B Peerzada the persons concerned had moved court in 1996, when the VMC began a drive to recover octroi from vehicles that plied in the city but were registered elsewhere. Apart from 2.5 per cent of the total value of the vehicles, the DyMC said the owners would have to pay interest as well.Superfast train
The 2963/2964 Sayajinagari Express is now running between Vadodara and Bandra Terminus as a super fast train. Superfast charges will be levied on all passengers, including season-ticket holders, from August 21.
MSU `black day'
Members of the AIDSO will observe a black day at the Faculty of Arts, M S University, on Friday in protest against the government's grant-in-aid policy introduced by the government recently. The Shikshan Bachao Samiti plans to take out a protest rally at Mangalbazaar in the same context on Friday.
Ban orders
Additional District Magistrate C R Kharsana on Thursday issued prohibitory orders in rural Vadodara in view of the electioneering for the Lok Sabha polls. The notification prohibits assembly of more than four people and warns violators of punitive action. The notification will remain in force till August 30.
BJP campaign
The BJP will kick off its election campaign for the Vadodara parliamentary constituency on Friday with the inauguration of the party's election office by Jail and Labour Minister Bhupendra Lakhawala. A party spokesman here said Vadodara candidate Jayaben Thakkar would hold election meetings in Kunpad, Mota Motipura, Pratap Nagar Samlaya and Vadiya areas of the district. The party's mahila morcha has also planned scores of public meetings.
Media workshop
The Greater Baroda Junior Chambers will organise a training workshop on `Subject Matter', to be conducted by well-known Mumbai-based artist Harish Bhimani, from Sunday. A release issued here said the workshop -- aimed at mediamen, comperes, announcers etc -- would be held for three hours on six consecutive Sundays.
