Mumbai gangster held in Viramgam

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, Aug 19: An Abu Salem gangster of Mumbai, wanted in several cases of looting and attempt to murder, was arrested in his native Viramgam after an early morning raid on Thursday.

The gangster, Dilawarkhan Hussain Kadarvalli Shaikh, told local police he had come away to Viramgam as Mumbai police always shot dead wanted criminals. However, he was handed over to Mumbai police on a transfer warrant.

The local police had been on the lookout for Dilawarkhan for some three months. Head Constable Ramtuji Chanaji and Constable Raghubhau Desai first spotted him on his motorcycle at a filling station and trailed him to Miyana Ni Chawli. They then informed their superiors.

About 3 a.m. Inspectors R.K. Patel, T.S. Patel, and D.S. Vyas staked out Miyana Ni Chawli with 30 State Reserve Police Force jawans. The policemen then stormed the house where Dilawarkhan was putting up and took him when he was asleep. They have recovered the addresses and phone numbers of his local contacts, including some in Juhapura, Ahmedabad.

District Superintendent of Police J.K. Bhatt said that Dilawarkhan is believed to have been staying in Viramgam after a 1996 shootout in Mumbai. Dilawarkhan and another gangster had got out of Maruti car that was given chase by Jogeshwari police and opened fire, injuring an inspector.

Dilawarkhan had first left his native town several years ago to work in a garage run by his relative in Juhu, Mumbai. He came to join the Abu Salem gang after coming into contact with Safur, one of its sharpshooter.

The first offence registered against him was a loot case. The next was an attempt on the life of a police officer. He is also the accused in four cases of attempt to murder by stabbing, and believed to be involved in several other crimes.

Dilawarkhan was married to one Shabana of Gomtipur in Ahmedabad some two years ago. They have a nine-month-old child. His wife has not been living with him as she does not approve of his activities.
