15 to contest Surat Lok Sabha seat

SURAT, Aug 19: After scrutinising forms for the Surat and Mandvi Lok Sabha seats, six Central observers, the district election officer and other officials today announced in the evening that while 15 candidates would contest the Surat seat, 25 would contest the Mandvi seat.

Saturday is the last day for withdrawal of nominations while elections would be held on September 5.

Briefing reporters in the evening, Collector and District Election Officer Sangeeta Singh along with District Development Officer (DDO) Bharat N Joshi, in-charge of the Mandvi seat, outlined the arrangements being made as far as polling staff and stations and counting centres were concerned.

The central observers, along with local officials, also heard complaints of various political parties in the afternoon. Asked if there were any serious complaints, Singh replied, ``Most of the complaints were not of a serious nature and were primarily from the BSP and CPI on minute details of the election code of conduct.''

Providing details of the arrangements in the Surat LS constituency, the collector said that 19,50,956 voters will exercise their franchise at 2760 polling centres. A total of 11,367 polling staff will be stationed in the constituency during the polls, most of whom had been drawn from the SMC, schools, IT department, LIC and different offices of the district administration, she added.

About the Mandvi constituency, DDO Joshi stated that 8500 polling staff will be stationed at 1304 polling stations.

The Central observers who have been appointed for the Surat LS seat are Subodh Kumar, Additional Municipal Commissioner, BMC, Jogendra Singh, Additional DG of the Directrorate of Revenue Intelligence, New Delhi and K N Kumar, Deputy Director, L B Shastri Academy of Administration, Mussorie.

The Central observers for the Mandvi LS seat are B P Meena, Joint Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai, L Krishnan, Additional Secretary, Finance, TN and Manoj Kumar, Municipal Commissioner of Shimla in HP.

Ballot papers have been printed at the Photo Litho Press, Ahmedabad and the ballot boxes have been brought from Rajasthan.

While the ballot boxes for the Mandvi seat have been brought from Rajasthan, the ballot papers have been printed at the Government Printing Press, Vadodara. Interestingly, ballot papers and boxes will be taken to two villages of the Mandvi constituency -- Jhamli and Saatkashi Budhwaada -- by boats.

Singh also stated that special care was being taken to ensure smooth polling as there had always been heavy rains and floods in Surat during the first fortnight of September.
