Nomination papers of covering Congress candidate rejected

CHANDIGARH, Aug 19: The nomination papers of the covering Congress candidate Sham Lal Gupta were rejected today after scrutiny. As many as 20 candidates had filed their papers for the lone Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat, going to poll on September 5.

After a prolonged and heated discussion, Deputy Commissioner-cum-Returning Officer M. Ramsekhar postponed till tomorrow the scrutiny of papers of Nationalist Congress party nominee Gurbachan Singh.

The papers of main contenders for this prestigeous seat, including Krishan Lal Sharma (BJP), Pawan Kumar Bansal (Congress), Mata Ram Dhiman (BSP), Ravi Prakash (Lok Shakti) and Manphool Singh (Samajwadi Party ) were found in order. The names of the remaining Independents were also found in order.

Saturday is the last day for withdrawal of candidatures.

Candidates of Lok Shakti, RRD meet residents
Lok Shakti candidate for Chandigarh Parliamentary constituency, Ravi Prakash Kansal, visited Colony No 5 today and listened to the grievances of the residents.

Kansal assured the residents that he would always be at their disposal and if elected would work for the betterment of the colony residents. He was introduced to Narvair Singh, Dinesh Singh Ved Prakash, Som Nath and Dhani Ram who joined the Lok Shaki after resigning from their respective parties.

In a separate election rally held in Sector 24, Kansal stated that he would approach the Centre after election for the discontinuation of lease of low-cost houses in sectors 24, 15 and 19.

  • Rashtriya Raksha Dal candidate Harsharan Singh visited Sector 45 today. He met the residents, particularly ex-servicemen, and discussed various problems - of stray cattle coming from Burial, irregular disposal of garbage, water shortage during summer season and mosquito eradication. Harsharan Singh promised to look into the problems of the residents after he is elected to the office.

    Mahila Cong to organise Shanti Divas
    Chandigarh Pradesh Mahila Congress is organising Shanti Divas on the eve of the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister - late Rajiv Gandhi - at Bapu Dham Colony. The divas will be held tomorrow.

    Jaipal Reddy's move to join Cong flayed
    The local unit of the Janata Dal Secular, led by former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, has criticised Jaipal Reddy's decision to join the Congress party. The party unit described it as a move for personal benefit when the elections are round-the-corner.

    EC appoints 3 observers
    The Election Commission has appointed B.K. Bal and Aradhna Johri as election observers (general) for the lone Chandigarh Parliamentary seat. K.P. Singh has been appointed as election observer (expenditure).

    These officers will be available every morning from 9 to 10.30 till August 22 to hear the complaints relating to the election. These officers would then be available from August 31 to September 6, and then from October 4 to 7. K.P. Singh would be available from August 29 to September 6.

    Congress election office inaugurated in Mohali
    The local election office of the Congress Party was inaugurated here today in Phase III-B-2. Shamsher Singh Dullo, the party nominee from Roopnagar constituency inaugurated the office. Other senior party leaders were also present on the occasion.
