Patrawala, Singh in Cong list for Mumbai

MUMBAI, AUG 22: In the second list of Congress candidates declared on Sunday, 27 of the 34 constituencies in Mumbai have finally got a candidate each. Prominent among them are former minister Marzaban Patrawala (Colaba), P A Desai (Malabar Hill), Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) general secretary Kripa Shankar Singh (Santacruz), MPCC secretary Suresh Shetty (Andheri), Mumbai Youth Congress president Charan Singh Sapra (Mulund) and MPCC spokesperson Dr Vijaya Patil (Worli).

Patrawala will take on Nationalist Congress Party's Ashok Dhatrak, who is also his former Congress colleague. Patrawala was not nominated for the last Assembly Election and Dhatrak was the only Congress candidate to win from Mumbai.

Among the constituencies yet to be decided upon is the high profile Kherwadi within which falls the Matoshri Bungalow of Shiv Sena Chief Bal Thackeray. Only 13 of the 144 constituencies declared in the second list have been alloted to the Republican Party of India, both the Prakash Ambedkar andR S Gavai factions. Among these are Sewri, Goregaon, Chembur, and Bhandup.

The second list was cleared by the party's central election committee in New Delhi late Saturday night. Outside Mumbai, former MPCC president Shivajirao Deshmukh has been nominated for Shirala in Sangli District and Anantrao Thopte for Bhor in Pune district. He was the mastermind and chief coordinator for party president Sonia Gandhi election rally in Bhor earlier this month.

The Congress has also finally decided on its candidates for the prestigious Pune Lok Sabha constituency. Pune district president Mohan Joshi will fight the election though speculation was rife that MPCC campaign chief Suresh Kalmadi will get his wife Meera nominated for the seat.

Former minister Chandrika Kenia finds a place in the second list, she will contest the Assembly election from Ghatkopar. Kenia, a fire brand Congress leader was elected for one term in the Rajya Sabha on a Shiv Sena ticket but later contested the Thane Lok Sabha constituency onSamajwadi Party ticket in 1998.

Cong nominees for Assembly polls are: Saeed Ahmed (Nagpada), Abdulla Shahadat (Umekhadi), Bhavar Singh Rajpurohit (Mumbadevi), Sahibrao Deshmukh (Khetwadi), Madhu Chavan (Chinchpokli), Rambachan Murai (Mazgaon), Arun Nare (Parel), Rajan Bhosale (Dadar), Bhupendra Joshi (Matunga), Eknath Gaikwad (Dharavi), Ashok Jadhav (Vile Parle), Baldev Khosa (Amboli), Baba Siddiqui (Bandra), Tarashankar Choube (Malad), Pradumna Mehta (Kandivli), Ashok Sutrale (Borivali), Sohail Ashraf (Trombay), Rajhans Singh (Nehru Nagar) and Naseem Khan (Kurla).
