Mine explosion in China claims 25; 30 missing

AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
BEIJING, AUG 27: A gas explosion that ripped through a coal mine in central China's Henan province killed 25 miners and left 30 others missing, mine officials said Friday.

The explosion occurred Tuesday at the Hanzhuang mine in the state-run Pingdingshan mining area, officials said.

The state-run Worker's Daily newspaper said 74 miners were in the mine shaft when the explosion tore through the area following an electrical outing. Only 19 miners were rescued, it said. Investigations into the incident are underway.

According to official figures, mining accidents killed 7,423 people last year.
