Symbols allotted to independent candidates

PUNE, Aug 27: An independent candidate in the fray for the polls in Pune Lok Sabha candidate wanted to have a coconut as his election symbol. However, he had to be content with a pineapple after loosing the lottery for the symbol to another independent candidate who also wanted the coconut as his election symbol.

A whole range of free symbols was allotted to the independent candidates contesting the elections in the three Lok Sabha and 18 Assembly constituencies in the district on Friday.

Some of these symbols were dam, car, book rest, kite, railway engine, bungalow, bus, television, jeep, carom board, walking stick, cart, aeroplane, candles, chair, hanger and even an axe.

The aspirants of the Republican Party of India (RPI) faction led by Ramdas Athawale and workers of Arun Gawli's Akhil Bharatiya Sena (ABS) as well as a member of Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha were also given free symbols as the Election Commission has yet not reserved the election symbols for these parties.
