Delphin, Deepan win

KOZHIKODE, AUG 27: For Madurai girl C.Delphin the under-14 girls National Rapid title was her first in any chess competition at the National level. She won it with a round to spare at the Indoor Stadium here today with a score of five points from six rounds in the National Rapid Chess Championships (u-12 and u-14).

``I should have won in Calcutta,'' she said of her miss in the under-14 competition in classical chess earlier this year. Delphin defeated teammate Priyadarshini in English Opening in the fifth round and then lost to Amrutha Mokal of Maharashtra in the final round.

Deepan Chakravarthy made it a double for Madurai when he too won the under-12 boys title with a round to spare. Deepan took a draw with Rahul Sangma of Bihar in the penultimate round to score 6.5 points from seven rounds and finished off with another draw with R S Prasanna of TN in the last round for seven points from eight rounds.

Top seed Valay Parikh of Gujarat also won the title in under-14 boys category with a round to spare.He split the point with his nearest rival Somak Palit of West Bengal in Caro-Kann Defence in the sixth round and then drew with Somak Palit of West Bengal in the last round to finish off his engagements with 5.5 points from seven games.

In the under-12 girls category, teammates Kruthika Nadig and Eesha Karvade of Maharashtra took the contest to the last round. Eesha Karvade triumphed in the last round against Mahima of TN and tallied 6.5 points from seven rounds.
