Defacing of public properties -- Two candidates booked

PUNE, SEPT 3: The official nominee of Congress in the Shirur Assembly constituency Babanrao Pacharane and his contender Jayashritai Palande of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had an encounter with the model code of conduct on Wednesday when separate cognizable cases were filed against them for defacing properties in Shirur town.

The action was taken against Pacharane and Palande by the Pune rural police after the Chief Executive Officer of Shirur Municipal Council, Ravindra Jadhav, lodged first information reports (FIR) against them at the Shirur police station.

According to the FIR filed against Pacharane, accompanied by his supporter Anil Dhawale stuck a poster displaying the photograph of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on the walls of a house.

Palande and the secretary of the Shirur unit of BJP Dinesh Bhujbal allegedly put up a banner displaying Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on another residence in the town, a report forwarded to the State Chief Electoral Officer by the District Collectorateon Thursday.

With the registration of these two cases, the report said, the total number of poll-related cognizable offences filed at various police stations in the district has reached 48.

Meanwhile, the Daund police on Wednesday filed two other non-cognizable cases pertaining to violation of the model code for the ensuing Lok Sabha and State Assembly polls.

A case was filed against Sanjay Sonawane under the Motor Vehicles Act after he installed a flag of the Congress on his motorcycle without obtaining prior permission.

The other case was filed against Shahaji Gade after he installed a BJP flag and a loudspeaker on a jeep for canvassing without obtaining prior permission, officials from the district collectorate said.

With these two cases, the total number of non-cognizable offences pertaining to the violation of model code in various parts of the district has reached 81.
