PUNE, Sept 3: Three workers at the under construction affluence treatment plant in Chikli of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation died of asphyxiation after falling into a sewerage filtration tank on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Pimpri fire brigade the mishap took place when the supervisor, Sambhaji Survase (52) fell into the tank. Pandurang Munde (20) a labourer tried to save him and went into the tank but also succumbed to the noxious fumes. The third person, Vithal Garware (40) also tried to rescue his co-workers but he too fell to his death.
Meanwhile Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner B I Nagrale said that the municipal corporation was considering giving compensation to the families of the deceased persons. He said the family of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) worker who died in the incident will be getting the compensation.
Nagrale said though it was up to the private firm involved to decide on compensating the families of the two deceased employees, the PCMC too would be examining how financial aid could be given on humanitarian grounds. He pointed out that the tank was not fully functional and testing was underway at the time of the mishap.
