PUNE, SEPT 3: Chhagan Bhujbal, Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) Maharashtra unit president, said on Thursday that had the Congress president Sonia Gandhi proposed Sharad Pawar's name for the prime minister's post after the fall of A B Vajpayee government the elections could have been averted.Addressing an election rally for NCP candidate Krishnarao Bhegde, Bhujbal expressed confidence that the saffron alliance would not benefit from the split in Congress since Sonia took the lead the party had been totally marginalised. He also predicted that MLAs from the Congress would join NCP after the Assembly polls.
Pawar was the only leader in the Congress to have got elected the maximum number of MPs (38) from Maharashtra in whole of the country and also is the most capable leader with a mass base and experience, Bhujbal added.
The NCP along with its allies, which Bhujbal claimed would win over 30 seats in Maharashtra, could consider alliance with the Congress minus Sonia as the post-poll scenario is expectedto change and there would be polarisation of parties.
It was not just the foreign origin issue of Sonia, but also her lack of experience which Pawar, along with P A Sangma and Tariq Anwar, raised resulting in their expulsion from the Congress party. The time of the issue raise was appropriate as Sonia, who had earlier maintained that she did not want power, suddenly became desirous of becoming the prime minister, Bhujbal claimed.
Bhujbal further stated that his party would frame charges against those persons who had been found guilty in Srikrishna Commission report if voted to power.
Describing Chief Minister Narayan Rane as `Narya Dada', Bhujbal said Rane, who was framed in a murder case, had no right to run the government.
