Relief for slain porters' kin hiked

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
KARGIL, SEPT 4: The Jammu and Kashmir Government proposes to increase the compensation for the families of porters who had laid down their lives while helping the Army during the Kargil battle, from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. This follows a series of reports in The Indian Express highlighting the plight of the families of slain porters. They were being initially treated at par with victims of militancy who are entitled to a compensation of Rs 1 lakh.

Thirteen porters, including six from this district and four from Jammu, were killed during Operation Vijay, besides one each from Nepal and Bihar.

Kargil DCP Shaleen Kabra told newspersons that the increased compensation would be paid as soon as the formal orders are issued. Meanwhile, following reports in The Indian Express on compensation cheques getting bounced, the State Government issued fresh cheques under a ``different head'', which have been honoured by the banks.
