The Indian Express brings you snippets from the Pak mediaDelhi is overbearing towards Dhaka THE NATION: Protests that started in Bangladesh in the wake of a transit treaty signed with New Delhi have now turned violent. Last month a peaceful 90 miles march was organised by a four party alliance, led by the former Prime Minister Khalida Zia, against the agreement. This time on Sunday tempers rose high, and demonstrators clashed with police in Dhaka and Chittagong. Over the last 28 years, New Delhi had been trying without success to persuade several governments in Bangladesh to allow trans-shipment of Indian goods across its land route. In July this year, the Awami League government finally agreed to the proposal. The Opposition alliance has opposed the agreement on the ground that the facility could be used by India to transport its troops to suppress insurgency in some of its far flung states. Few in Bangladesh give credit to Indian assurances. It is well remembered in thecountry how India has violated several international agreements and solemn treaties...India's hegemony has often expressed itself in disrespect for the international borders of Bangladesh. In April this year, Bangladesh army had to fight a nine-hour battle in Jamalpur area, bordering West Bengal, using mortars and machine guns to push out the invading Indian troops from its territory. Thousands of Bangladeshi villagers were rendered homeless on account of the Indian aggression. In August, a joint Indian Police task force from Assam and West Bengal intruded 200 kilometers deep into Bangladesh to allegedly recover explosives from a Rajshahi mosque. Incidents of maltreatment of the Muslim minority in India invariably invoke sharp reaction in Bangladesh where people also condemn Indian atrocities in the Kashmir valley. When Vajpayee visited Dhaka in June this year, for instance, a rally in support of the Kashmiri freedom fighters was taken out in the city. The recent protests in Bangladesh prove that India'soverbearing attitude towards its neighbours will continue to evoke strong popular reaction all over the region.
