CHANDIGARH, SEPT 14: The Chandigarh Ophthalmological Society has condemned the recent demonstrations and protests against Dr Rajan Chugh, who allegedly removed an eye of a PU employee unnecessarily.According to Dr B.P.S. Malhotra, president of the Society, the patient had a dead white eye for 20 years and used an artificial eye over it for cosmetic reasons. He had sought treatment for a recent unsightly bulge and pain, and was offered partial removal which was the only permanent treatment possible, which the patient accepted.
Dr R. Kumar, senior vice-president of the Society, said that when the patient is satisfied, only then does he pay the medical fee. He said that when the patient's demand of getting a fictitious bill for Rs 15,000 for reimbursement, instead of the concessional Rs 2,150 which was charged, was not accepted, the patient threatened the doctor and tore the medical record papers.
The behaviour of the patient and the action of president of PU Non-Teaching Employees Federation was condemned, with doctors blaming them for politicising the issue and tarnishing the reputation of Dr Chugh.
