AIDS education programme to be started in 30 schools

CHANDIGARH, SEPT 14: The governing body of the State AIDS Control Society of UT has decided to start AIDS education programme in 30 Senior Secondary Schools in the UT during the current financial year.

In a meeting held by Rakesh Singh, Finance and Health Secretary, it was informed that to pursue this programme two workshops for the principals of schools had already been organised by the AIDS Prevention and Control Society. Under this programme, principals, selected teachers and student representatives of the schools will interact with the students to educate and make them conscious about the problems of the deadly disease.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner M. Ramsekhar, Director Health Services Dr Joginder Singh and Joint Secretary Finance K.A.P. Sinha.

To assess the current practices, behaviour and understanding of HIV among people, the society has also decided to conduct Communication Needs Assessment Study of the programme by identifying target groups.

A seven-member Information and Communication Committee for State AIDS Control Society was constituted with Director Health Services as its chairman and Directors of Public Relations UT, Panjab University, Station Director All India Radio, president Press Club and Head of Department Dermatology and Veneriology, PGI.

In order to review the function, analysis and factors responsible for the under-utilisation of the services of all the clinics of Sexually Transmitted Diseases in the UT, another committee was constituted, with Dr Bhushan Kumar, Head of Department Dermatology and Veneriology, PGI as its coordinator.
