Employment scheme to tackle poverty

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, SEPT 14: A new re-structured self-employment programme, the Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY), will take over from previous government-funded employment-generation schemes. Launched by the Ministry of rural Development in April, SGSY is expected to fulfil the promises that earlier programmes like Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP), Training of Rural Youth for Self-Employment (TRYSEM), Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA) etc failed to deliver.

Touted as a ``holistic programme'', covering all aspects of self-employment -- like organising the poor into self-help group, training, credit, technology, infrastructure and marketing -- the SGSY will be co-funded by both Centre and the states in a 75:25 ratio. All previously allocated money to other government programmes will now be pooled under SGSY as per the new guidelines. The yojana aims to establish a large number of micro-enterprises in rural areas to bring every assisted family (Swarozgaris) above the poverty line within three years. Each Gram Sabha will authenticate the list of families below the poverty line in particular villages.

The scheme will identify key activities for each block based on the resources, occupational skills of people and market.
