Rains rescue GEB

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, SEPT 14: Recent rains in Gujarat have not only decreased electricity demand by 500 MW but also enabled the Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) save lakhs of rupees. For the last two days, the Board did not have to draw additional power from the central sector, due to rains.

According to highly placed sources, the peak demand which was around 6,900 MW a few days ago has gone down to 6,400 MW in the last couple of days, with the farm sector getting rain water for agriculture. Sources said now every few farmers used electric pumps to get water for irrigation.

A top official of the Board said that currently the GEB is supplying 145 million units electricity to the consumers in tune with the demand.

A few days ago, the GEB was drawing 2,000 MW about 800 MW more than its allotted share from the Central Sector, the official said, adding that now with the Board needing to draw only 12,00 MW, lakhs of rupees would be saved. He, however, said that the situation would remain the same only if it continued to rain in the next few days.
