Rohida associate Ambrose brought to city, `arrested'

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, SEPT 14: Ambrose Francis Pawar, an associate of underworld don Raju Rohida, was brought to the city on a court transfer warrant on Tuesday. Pawar was injured in a police encounter last month.

Pawar was formally shown arrested at the Makarpura Police Station at 3 pm. He was wanted in connection with two murderous assault on city builder Kanti Patel on September 4, 1993 and October 15, 1993. Although the FIR accused seven persons in the first attempt to kill Patel by throwing hand grenades, Pawar's name was missing. But during interrogation after his arrest in 1997, Rohida revealed Pawar's involvement in the first incident. All the accused were, however, acquitted by the court subsequently for lack of evidence and the case was closed. Since Pawar was absconding, police revived the case by filing a fresh chargesheet against him, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South, Mohan Jha, told newsmen on Tuesday evening.

Jha said Pawar hailed from Vadodara and lived in staff nurse quarters of SSG Hospital near Kirti Mandir. While his mother worked as nurse, his father was a technician in operation theatre. His brothers and other relatives live in Tarsali till date.

During interrogation Pawar revealed that he was on his way to Brajeshwari with his family, when the encounter killed his son and Rohida. Pawar, who was injured along with his wife, is still serious and has difficulty in speaking, policemen interrogating him said.

Meanwhile, highly reliable sources said documentary evidence reveals that Rohida made at least 50 calls to the suspects involved in hiring him to kill Shailesh `Sotta' Mehta. He claimed payment of remaining part of the `contract' money in July and August, before his death. Rohida also provided his Mumbai contact numbers to the suspects, which, ironically, helped the police to track hom down. Rohida also made calls to other prominent builders for ransom.
