`Smart' potatoes in 21st century
AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
LONDON, SEPT 16: Farmers in the 21st century will be able to grow genetically modified plants with a "fluorescent" gene which would glow whenever in need of water or fertiliser, said a report in Britain's The Independent newspaper on Wednesday.Academics at Edinburgh University told the paper they could develop a new generation of "smart plants" using jellyfish genes. "They would be sentinels in the field," said researcher Ann Haley. Besides, these plants would help increase productivity. Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
