MUMBAI, SEPT 16: After the caving in on Monday, there has been no further damage. Radha Kharwa, who witnessed the collapse, strolls around with her grandchild fearlessly. Pointing to a huge gap in the corridor, she says that atleast the Maharashtra Housing Area Development Authority (MHADA) officials would carry out repairs on the 18-year-old structure.
The cave-in does not make news anymore. On the day of the incident and the day after that, there was frantic activity, what with MHADA officials, the fire brigade, the police and even the politicians visiting the building. But nobody has visited them thereafter.
The building has been declared dilapidated by MHADA, but notices to the 41 tenants to vacate the building have fallen on deaf ears. The residents are adamant about not leaving and are determined to take MHADA to court over the poor quality of the buiding's construction.
Some of the more active members waited all day to get a report from a private engineer they hired to certify that repairs canbe carried out on the building without the tenants having to vacate it. Parshuram Karande, scretary of the Maniyar Residents' Building Chawl Association, said the writ petition would be filed tomorrow.
