Sixteen year old girl hangs herself

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

CHANDIGARH, Sept 16: A 16-year-old girl committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Sector 45 here this morning.

The deceased, Sumiti Sharma, was a student of Class X of Sector 32 S.D. Public School. The police did not find any suicide note but believed that Sumiti resorted to the extreme step out of severe tension because of an old illness. The police ruled out any foul play.

Sumiti was alone at home when she committed suicide. Both her parents are working and were not at home; her father was out on a tour while her mother had gone to condole somebody's death. Her only brother is handicapped and is a computer trainee in a local institution, added the police. Around 11.45 a.m. when he returned home from his institute, Sumiti did not respond to his knocking the door. He pushed open the door to find her hanging to the ceiling with a chunni rolled around her neck.

In a separate case, Payal Jain (17), a resident of Manimajra was admitted to the PGI after she reportedly consumed some poisonous substance at her house. It is not known whether she attempted suicide or consumed the substance accidentally, said police sources.
