TORONTO, SEPT 16: Spurred by a 131-run opening stand between Saeed Anwar (63) and Wajahutullah Wasti, Pakistan attained a respectable 230-6 in their allotted 50 overs in their inaugural match against West Indies of the DMC Cup one-day series. Electing to bat under cold and overcast conditions at the Toronto Cricket and Curling Club this morning, Pakistan were aided by the erratic Windies pacemen who accounted for 43 extras.Though the West Indies came back strongly in the middle overs, Azhar Mahmood's last over assault on Mervyn Dillon swung the balance towards Pakistan again. Mahmood slammed a six and three boundaries in succession to swell Pakistan's run tally.
AKHTAR RULED OUT: The World Cup runners-up suffered a serious setback before the tournament took off when world's fastest bowler Shoaib Akhtar was ruled out of the series due to a sore shoulder.
The fiery Akhtar has been advised four weeks rest and will be flying back home tomorrow.
