NASHIK, SEPT 17: An official of the Nashik jail was injured when he intervened in a clash between gangsters of Dawood and Chhota Rajan gangs. The incident took place on Thursday, when Sajid Ali, Momin Sheikh, Saleem Razak, Shammi Beig and three others affiliated to the Dawood gang, picked up a quarrel with Chhota Rajan gangsters Raju Narayan Nalawade, Vyankatesh Rajendra Singh, Kasim alias Shamim Munna, and six others near the Quarentine Yard.
The quarrel led to fisticuffs and stone pelting. A Class II jailor, Dinkar Patil, who intervened in the free for all was assaulted and kicked in the groin following which an alarm for help was sounded. Jail superintendent Ram Jadhav and staff members rushed to the spot. However, the clashes continued, prompting Jadhav to call the police.
Subsequently, the Nashik Road police controlled the clashes and offences were registered against eight members of the Dawood gang and ten members of the Rajan gang. Five gangsters also sustained minor injuries during theclashes.
Although precautions are taken to ensure that goons of rival gangs do not come face to face, on this particular occasion, a log of tree while being taken out of the quarantine yard had jammed the gate, providing an opportunity to the inmates to go out towards members of the Rajan gang.
The Nashik jail houses about 2,300 criminals and undertrials, including 48 from the Dawood gang and 38 from the Chhota Rajan gang. They are lodged seperately in the quarantine yard and circle no 2 yard, respectively. Some members of both the gangs have been permitted by the court to eat food supplied from outside.
About three months ago, some members of the Arun Gawli gang had assaulted some inmates, who were earlier with their gang but had left to form their own group.
