Motor accident tribunal chief told to quitPresident of the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal M J Borge was made to resign by the Law and Judiciary department last week, it has been reliably learnt. This followed an enquiry conducted by the Special Investigation Department (SID) of the Bombay High Court that enquired into a large number of complaints made by advocates against Borge on charges of corruption and misadministration and found them valid.
According to high court sources, the recommendation to the state government to seek the resignation of Borge had been made by the SID way back in April 1999. But to no avail. However, earlier this month, the SID again reminded the Law and Judiciary department on the recommendation and the department after calling Borge forced him to resign from the post.
Five nabbed for Narvekar killing
Five persons were arrested by Unit V of the crime branch in the last two days in connection with the murder of Prakash Narvekar, a former BEST employee and keymember of the Golden Chain scheme in which lakhs of persons were duped. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Usha Iyer of the 3rd Metropolitan Magistrate's court today remanded Shirish Khot (31), Pundalik Valve (26), Subhash Jadhav (24), Ganesh Patil (21) and Salam Shaikh (39) to police custody till October 10. On December 12, 1998, Narvekar was kidnapped from his residence and taken to an unknown destination. On December 26 his family received a threatening call to pay up but the family did not respond to the threats. Narvekar's abductors then smashed his head with a stone and stabbed him on the chest with a sharp weapon. Later his body was dumped near Vajreshwari.
Further remand for Ashwin Naik
Underworld don Ashwin Naik was today further remanded to police custody till September 27 by the Esplanade Metropolitan Court. Sources said Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Usha Iyer went to the crime branch lock-up and further remanded him to police custody in connection with a murder case.Naik could not be produced in court for security reasons.
