Lok Adalat to be held on Sept 25

CHANDIGARH, Sept 17: The District Legal Services Authority has decided to organise a Lok Adalat in the district courts on September 25. The Lok Adalat is being organised under the aegis of the State Legal Services Authority and with the assistance of the District Bar Association.

This Lok Adalat will take up cases related to motor accident claims, land acquisition, matrimonial disputes, civil suits, rent matters, landlord-tenant controversies and traffic challan matters.

Challans under the Commercial Establishment Act and other cases pertaining to compoundable offences will also be taken up during the Adalat which will be inaugurated by Justice N.K. Sodhi, Judge, Punjab and Haryana High Court and executive chairman, State Legal Services Authority.

Seven power theft accused get bail
Seven persons arrested by the city police for committing theft of power were produced yesterday in the court of UT Judicial Magistrate (Ist Class) Jasbir Singh who granted them bail.

Earlier, on Sept 15, the Magistrate, after taking up applications filed by city police, had remanded all seven to judicial custody till Sept 28. Notice to the state on their bail applications had been issued for Sept 16. The arrests were effected on the complaint filed by D.P. Singh, AEE, Engineering Operations. A case under Section 379 IPC and Section 39 of the Indian Electricity Act was registered.

The arrested persons are: Ankit Rawat, Arun Sharma, Jagmohan Thakur, Rajender Parsad, Surender Kumar, Surender Singh and Sarwan Kumar.

Two convicted for rash driving
Two city residents have been convicted here in separate cases of rash and negligent driving.

In the first case, UT Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate H.S. Madaan today held one Harjinder Singh guilty of having caused the death of a 17-year-old boy while driving a Gypsy rashly. The Magistrate sent him to rigorous imprisonment for a period of one and a half year and also slapped a fine of Rs 1,500 on him. In case of default of payment of fine, the accused was directed to undergo further RI for 3 months.

The Magistrate observed that on December 12, 1992, the accused was driving rashly and his rash driving was the cause of death of one Jatinder Kumar. The case against the accused was registered in December 1992 under Sections 279, 304 A IPC.

In yet another case of rash and negligent driving, UT Judicial Magistrate (Ist Class) A.K. Bishnoi convicted a Khuda Lahora resident Rajesh Kumar of causing grievous injury to a scooterist and directed him to undergo imprisonment of six months and pay a fine of Rs 500. The allegation was that on January 20, 1992, the accused was driving his Bullet motor cycle in a rash and negligent manner and hit one Rajinder Raj, who was on his scooter.
