PUNE, Sept 17: Pune Municipal Commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad has accelerated the process of shifting of garbage depot at Kothrud by sending a proposal of land acquisition at Undari Pisoli to the standing committee. The standing committee is expected to take up the issue for discussion next week. Gaikwad has proposed to acquire about 187.5 acre of land, mainly at a stone quarry at Undari Pisoli where the garbage from the entire city will be dumped. The municipal Commissioner also has sent another proposal of converting garbage into fertiliser to avoid nuisance to the local residents. The second proposal is also expected to be discussed simultaneously.
The State Government has suggested four sites including Urali Devachi, Yeolewadi, Mhatobachi Alandi and Wadgaon Shinde to the municipal corporation for garbage depot. However, all the four sites were found inconvenient for some or other reasons. Gaikwad then undertook special efforts to search alternate site following increasing pressure from the residents at Kothrud.
The administration located an abandoned stone quarry at Undari Pisoli. After preliminary study, it was found that the quarry could be used for the purpose for another 20 years. According to the proposal, about 187.5 acre land at survey no 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30 at Undari Pisoli would be acquired for the purpose. Besides, a portion of the land at survey no 7,8 and 9 is also proposed for acquisition for 40 feet approach road.
The civic administration has also shortlisted two companies - Comex India Environmental Engineering and IVR Constructions Ltd, which have submitted their proposals for converting garbage into fertiliser. Comex India will need 300 metric tonnes every day for its project and IVR Constructions will require 150 metric tonnes garbage. Comex India has requested three acres of land while IVR Constructions has asked for ten acres of land for the project.
