SMC meet to consider proposal for dismissal of city engineer

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SOLAPUR, Sept 17: All eyes are set on the civic general body meeting scheduled for Monday next which would consider the Municipal Commissioner's proposal to sack city engineer R R Badurwale.

Municipal Commissioner D N Mandalekar has recommended dismissal of the City Engineer for misappropriation of cement bags in one of the Solapur Municipal Corporation (SMC) stores and negligence.

Inquiry was launched in the cement misappropriation that had rocked the SMC after complaints from the Janata Dal corporator Suresh Tamshetty and Bharatiya Janata Party corporator Iqbal Railiwala.

The quantum of cement at the civic store had been found less than the quantity required. According to a register maintained at the SMC store there should be 303 cement bags in stock but a physical checking by Assistant Municipal Commissioner (administration) G R Godbole had found only 114 cement bags.

The Commissioner charged Badruwale with negligence while chalking out an estimate for 21 city roads. The estimates were found exaggerated and Badruwale was held guilty of misuse of power while ordering the work at Pune road octroi checkpost.

The Municipal Commissioner suspended Badurwale on August 16. Badurwale was given an opportunity to file his say, but his clarification were stated to be unsatisfactory. The Commissioner later recommended dismissal of the City Engineer under section 56 (1) of the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporations (BPMC) Act.

Badruwale will be the second SMC City Engineer facing dismissal. Earlier Mohan Aurangabadkar had faced a similar action a couple of years ago.

Meanwhile, a section of SMC officials was of the opinion that Badruwale was being made a scapegoat.
