CHANDIGARH, SEPT 19: Haryana Lokayukta Act has been repealed. An ordinance repealing the Haryana Lokayukta Act, 1997, was issued today by Mahabir Prasad, Haryana Governor after the state cabinet recommended that the Act be repealed. The ordinance implies that the term of the present Lok Ayukta, Justice I P Vasishth, who took oath on January 5 this year would end prematurely. According to the repealed Act, the term of the Lok Pal is to be of five years. His appointment had been made during the tenure of Bansi Lal and the then leader of opposition, Om Prakash Chautala had opposed his appointment.
Interestingly it is the first time that Haryana had established the institution of the Lok Ayukta and Justice Vasishth was the first incumbent. The decision of the Haryana government is on similar lines to Punjab, which too had issued an ordinance repealing the Act. The Haryana Government also announced the appointment of an expert committee headed by a retired Judge of the Supreme Court or Chief Justice or Judgeof the High Court to suggest modifications in the Act. The committee which will be requested to ensure that Lokayukta is made an absolutely independent institution has been asked to finalise its report within six months.
