Oldest dinosaur fossil remains found in India

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, SEPT 19: Scientists have unearthed bones of what could possibly be the oldest Jurassic Age dinosaur fossil found in India, providing more evidence that these giant reptiles roamed the country millions of years ago.

A team from the Regional Geology Laboratory at Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) in Mumbai has found what appears to be a graveyard of millions-of-years-old dinosaurian skeletons in a new locality in Kuar Bet in Kutch region of Gujarat.

The fossil treasure found by K Satyanarayana, D K Dasgupta, Alok Dave and K K Das included several vertebrae and limb parts.

This is the first retrieval of the oldest fossil dinosaur from the earliest middle jurassic era in Kutch, a report by the scientists in the latest issue of Current Science says.

A systematic excavation of the site is required by professionals to reconstruct the full skeleton of what could possibly be a middle jurassic dinosaur -- the oldest record of these giant reptiles from Kutch -- the report said.

More than 12vertebrae and many other bone pieces were found, some still embedded in the area's sandstone, and others scattered over the outcrops covering an area of about 200-square metres.

The bones were 10-15 cm long and 9-10 cm broad.

This is a new region for dinosaur fossils; previously, there have only been records of dinosaur eggs from the nearby Anjar area.

This find, along with several other recent reports from other parts of the country during the last two decades, reemphaisizes the potential of India for dinosaurian studies, an editorial in Current Science says.
