Lalbaug Ganesh mandals attract thousands, police step up security

MUMBAI, SEPT 19: As thousands throng the various Ganesh mandals in Lalbaug, the police have stepped up bandobast. Around 200 police personnel have been deployed in the area, including Home Guards, O P Jedhia, Senior Police Inspector, Kalachowkie police station told Express Newsline.

The area boasts of some of the most popular Ganesh idols in the city, namely Lalbaug ka Raja, and those at Ganesh Galli, Teju kaya and Chinchpokli. Around three lakh people are estimated to visit the pandals here every year, forming long queues to catch a glimpse of the idols.

Apart from manning sensitive points, plainclothes personnel are also moving around to take criminal elements into custody, added Jedhia. The police have also warned that visitors to the area take care of their ornaments and personal belongings.
