Godhra town still in the grip of tension

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Sept 19: Tension continues to grip the sensitive parts of Godhra town, including Polan Bazar, where members of two communities clashed when a procession was passing through the area on Saturday evening. Four people -- three policemen and Rajya Sabha MP Gopalsinh Solanki -- were injured in the fracas.

``The situation is under control, but tension persists'', Panchmahals Collector A K Rakesh told Express Newsline over telephone on Sunday.

Asked why no arrests had been made so far in this connection, he said it was a difficult job identifying culprits from amonngst mobs. ``The police are trying to identify the guilty and arrest them'', he added.

According to Rakesh, it all began when, in front of a religious place, sections of the procession began playing the drums and other musical instruments with added vigour.

``Certain people objected to this. A verbal exchange followed and climaxed with the pelting of stones'', he said, adding that it had been brought under control within seven minutes.
