Peace talks can't solve crisis

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Sept 18: Peace talks are no solution to international crises, but can definitely provide a beginning, said J P Vaswani, recipient of the U Thant International Peace Award. Vaswani was at Sadhu Vaswani Vidyamandir here on Saturday.

Speaking to Express Newsline, Vaswani said, ``The basic problem has been with the way we educate our children, we just teach them to make careers and jobs, and not be sympathetic and selfless.''

Vaswani said that education these days was not value-based. It was more mind and less heart. ``Education earlier was stronger on values, students would be taught to care for others. Where is all that now?'' questioned Vaswani.

Peace conferences could just be a beginning, in fact they could be likened to sowing seeds which could be nurtured for further action. ``The ideal way to resolve differences between countries is, of course, to resort to talks, but before that both have to understand the real meaning of peaceful talks,'' said Vaswani.

``The only principle that I see in people is livelihood being treated as larger than life, but it should be the other way round,'' said Vaswani. He added that it was necessary to give children a career-oriented guidance, but that did not mean that humanity should be forgotten.

Later speaking to the school-children, Vaswani cited simple examples from life and suggested that they too should follow these principles if they were to become good human beings. He said the best way to live life was by keeping others happy. Vaswani added that only if the children learnt to build a better future for themselves would they be able to build one for the country.
