Trinidad shocks de la Hoya

LAS VEGAS: Felix Trinidad of Puerto Rico, with a burst of activity in the last three rounds, squeezed out a majority decision over Mexican-American Oscar de la Hoya to add the World Boxing Council welterweight title to his International Boxing Federation crown.

The decision stunned many ringsiders, who said they thought de la Hoya had built a substantial lead with hard jabs that appeared to keep Trinidad from getting inside for most of the 12-round battle of 26-year-old, 147-pound (66.6 kg) fighters.

Venus opened the best-of-five match tie with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Russian No 1 Elena Likhovtseva. Davenport defeated 17-year-old Russian Elena Dementieva 6-4, 6-0.

Barada falls to England's Johnson

CAIRO: Egypt's Ahmed Barada, who was soundly beaten in Thursday's World Open singles championship, went down to another demoralising defeat when he was felled by Englishman Paul Johnson in the world team championship -- England, the reigning champions, won the tie 2-1. The English left-hander, ranked fourth in the world and competing in his first World Team championships, beat Barada, who had been beaten by Scotland's Peter Nicol in Thursday's singles final, 9-0, 5-9, 9-2, 9-3.
