AK-47s smuggled into Amethi -- Cong

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, SEPT 20: The Congress today alleged that it had information that at least 100 AK-47 rifles had been smuggled into Amethi to create disturbances on polling day. Party chief Sonia Gandhi is contesting from Amethi which goes to polls in the last phase on October 3.

Party spokesperson Kapil Sibal said that he had information that an Opposition candidate from Amethi had planned to create disturbances and terror in the constituency on polling day and for this purpose he had smuggled in large quantity of arms and ammunition.

He however declined to name the candidate or the party he belonged to. The BJP has fielded former Union Minister Sanjay Singh against Sonia Gandhi. The party also condemned as outrageous Defence Minister George Fernandes's statement that the Director of Intelligence Bureau had confirmed that excess ballot papers had been printed for polling in Bihar.

Sibal said that neither did the IB have any role to play in the elections nor did the organisation report to the Defence Minister. He also claimed that the IB director had denied that he had made any such confirmation or that he had any role in the ballot box controversy.

The spokesperson said that the Defence Minister ``seems to have devoted considerable energies to compromise the neutrality of intelligence organisations through both words and deeds.''

Sibal also criticised the Governor's decision to write about the inadequate security arrangements for polling in the state to the Home Ministry instead of communicating it to the constitutional authority charged with the responsibility for the conduct of the election process.

``The party is of the view that constitutional offices should not be made the subject matter of public controversy and debate,'' Sibal said. The party has also decided to call upon President K.R. Narayanan to protest against what it said were continued attacks by the BJP on the Election Commission.

EC observer shifted

The controversial EC observer to Amethi D K Rao was today removed from hisassignment in the LS constituency from where Congress chief Sonia Gandhi is contesting. BJP had on Sunday, complained to the Commission that Rao had called on Priyanka Gandhi who has been campaigning for her mother in the constituency.
