MUMBAI, SEPT 21: The state cabinet today decided to raise the prices of diesel and petrol sold in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane and reduce the amount of toll to be collected from vehicles entering Mumbai.Addressing a press conference at Mantralaya this afternoon, Chief Minister Narayan Rane said citizens had no reason to worry as the hike would be nominal. ``I cannot specify the quantum of the fuel price hike and the date from which it would become effective as the proposals are to be submitted to the Bombay High Court. The hearing in the case against imposition of toll tax is slated for September 23. A notification detailing the fuel price hike would be issued after obtaining the court's approval,'' Rane said.
Rane said the proposed hike in fuel prices was aimed at offsetting the loss of revenue on account of reduced toll tax. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) had raised Rs 1,550 crore from the open market for constructing 55 flyovers in the metropolis. The state government hadlevied the toll tax to collect Rs 150 crore annually to repay the loan amount.
Various transport and traders' organisations had launched agitations opposing the toll and had also moved the HC. The court, while hearing the petitions, had stayed collection of toll at entry points of Mumbai. The government had assured HC of coming up with a new proposal.
