MP seeks Rs 75 crore aid

BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh Government has sought financial aid of Rs 75 crore from the Centre for relief works in flood affected areas even as the swollen Narmada river was flowing 3.82 meters above the danger mark at Mortakka bridge in Barwah today. Traffic on the Indore-Khandwa State Highway continued to remain affected on the sixth consecutive day. About 200 villages have been affected by floods in Hoshangabad, Raisen and Sehore districts.

ITBP jawan killed in militant ambush

SRINAGAR: An Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) jawan was killed and five others sustained gun-shot wounds in a militant ambush in Duksum area of Anantnag district in South Kashmir in the wee hours today. Militants ambushed an ITBP search party in the area around 2 am, killing Head Constable Lashkar Singh and wounding five others.

Freedom fighter dead

MUZAFFARNAGAR: Kadam Singh, a freedom fighter associated with Subhash Chandra Bose's Indian National Army (INA), died hereyesterday, his family sources said. Singh, 82, died after a prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife. He was a security officer with the INA.

Family of five commit suicide

KUMBAKONAM: A family of five living in Thirunageswaram near here committed suicide by consuming poison last night, police said today. Ramakrishnan (35), who was working as an accountant in a private company, was in dire poverty and could not make both ends meet and he along with his wife Lalitha (30), and three daughters, Pratha (5), Vichitra (3) and Vishnupriya (six months), committed suicide, police said.

34 take ill after consuming food

BAHRAICH (UP): Thirty-four people were taken ill, 14 of them seriously, after consuming food served in a religious ceremony at Babaganj town of the district, about 45 kms from here yesterday, Chief Medical Officer V S Saluja said. The seriously ill people were admitted to the district hospital while others were being treated by private doctors, Saluja said.
