Dean's sentence stalled

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Sept 21: A civil court on Tuesday suspended the five-day civil imprisonment of Dr D N Shah, Dean of Baroda Medical College, till September 27 following the dean's appeal application in the court.

In his application, Dr Shah asked for a chance to put across his views on the case and, thus, pleaded the court to suspend the judgment. After hearing the plea the court suspended the judgment till September 27.

Dr Shah was sentenced to five-day civil imprisonment on Friday after Dr Praveen Chaudhary, a student of the College, filed an application alleging contempt on part of the Dean in refusing to admit him despite the May 26 court orders.

Dr Chaudhary's advocate Narendra Tiwari argued that a caveat had already been filed by the complainant in the court.

In his submission, the Dean had stated that since Dr Chaudhary took five attempts to pass his MBBS, he was not eligible for PG admission according to norms which allowed only four attempts.

However, in their contention, Tiwari argued that as per the interpretation of the word attempt, Dr Chaudhary's first attempt should be considered as a trial and the remaining as attempts. Thus Dr Chaudhary was entitled for admission, he contended.
