PUNE, Sept 21: The PMC standing committee meeting today unanimously turned down the administration's proposal to hand over maintenance of part of Wagholi water supply scheme to Jaihind Projects Ltd, which had been held responsible for the collapse of a water tank at Nigdi. The issue once again figured at general body meeting today when several corporators came down heavily on the administration for trying to award work to the company, which had been held guilty by the Agarwal committee. A strong demand by the corporators finally forced the administration to announce inquiry into the case and call fresh tenders for the work.
Committee chairman Arun Dhimdhime told media persons that the members asked whether the administration had received a copy of the committee report in which it had suggested that the company should not be awarded any work in State for a period of five years.
The officials present at the meeting clarified that they had not received the copy till date and work was proposed to be awarded to the company since it had assured warranty till March next. The clarification could not satisfy the members who were of the view that the corporation should not take any risk by taking over the project from Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP) till the defect liability period was over.
Sensing the mood of the committee members, the officials proposed to withdraw the docket. The members, however, remained adamant and rejected the proposal unanimously.
The issue also came up at the general body meeting in the evening. Several corporators criticised the administration for not taking any steps during the past 24 hours even after issue was discussed at the meeting. Additional city engineer (Water Supply) V G Dhadpbhale told the meeting that he had sent a letter to MJP asking for a copy of the Agarwal Committee report while the administration had also withdrawn the docket at standing committee meeting. Suhas Kulkarni and Vikas Mathkari of the BJP sought to know whether the administration had admitted its mistake by withdrawing the docket. Mathkari attacked the administration demanding action against the officials who had prepared the proposal.
Chaos prevailed at the meeting when several corporators demanded that the administration should own up its mistake while others insisted for inquiry into the case. Additional Municipal Commissioner Ashok Deshpande assured the meeting that he would conduct a separate inquiry and action would be taken after fixing the responsibility.
