PCMC seeks seven new wards for fringe villages

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Sept 21: A proposal for formation of seven new civic wards in the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) for representation of the 14 newly-merged village areas has been forwarded to the State government for approval.

The State Election Commission had recently directed the PCMC complete formation of new wards in the merged villages so that elections could be held there. The ward formation is to be finalised after inviting suggestions and objections.

The number of wards for the new village areas has been restricted to seven because of the rules framed by the Election Commission. The number of wards depend on the population and 79 wards were formed for a population of 5.17 lakh before the last civic elections in 1997. After the merger of the villages the population has increased to 6.31 lakh.

According to the rules, there should be 85 wards for a population of six lakh and one additional ward for every additional population of 20,000. As PCMC has 79 wards, the number of wards for the villages has been restricted to seven.

On September 11, 1997 the areas of Dapodi, Bopkhel, Dighi, Charholi, Vadmukhwadi, Dudulgaon, Moshi, Chikhli, Talavade, Mamurdi, Kivale, Punavale and remaining portions of Ravet and Wakad were merged in PCMC limits. The villages as yet have no elected representatives in the municipal corporation. If the elections in the villages were to be held in the next civic elections, there would be no representation of the villages in the civic body for another two years. The State Election Commission had directed authorities to initiate the process of formation of new wards for the village areas.

At present, in the 79 wards, the average population per ward is 6,500, but in village areas the population per ward is nearly 16,000. There is no uniformity in areas in each of the new wards. According to the proposal, three wards are ti be formed by including the four villages of Talawade, Chikhli, Moshi, and Dudulgaon, two wards by combining the four villages of Charholi, Wadmukhwadi, Dighi and Bopkhel, and two wards by combining the six villages of Dapodi, Wakad, Ravet, Punavale, Kivale, and Mamurdi.
