St Xavier's champions

Express News Service
MUMBAI, September 21: St Xavier's College regained the Mumbai University inter-collegiate women's basketball title at Indian Gymkhana today, beating GN Khalsa College 47-18 in the final. Xavier's had yielded the title last year to VG Vaze after winning in 1997-98. Podar finished third, beating Vaze 49-17 in another one-sided affair.

Khalsa suffered from lack of arsenal in offence. Quintina Noronha, who was their only good player in offence, was easily marked by a sound Xavier's defence. Khalsa also did well while protecting their own end, and managed to keep junior National Loveena Figueiredo from running amok. But it took only a simple screen for Xavier's to flounder Khalsa. Sangeeta D'Silva did that job with aplomb, and made merry on the passes from Loveena to top-score with 25 points.

The end of the game was marred by a sad incident, when Khalsa's Sonali D'Souza was brought down by Xavier's Sangeeta D'Silva. Sonali lay motionless on the court for a few moments and suffered a blow on herhead.
