BANGALORE, SEPT 22: It's a fairytale popular with children worldwide. But, who could have imagined that the Kannada adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, -- a charming story by the Grimms Brothers -- would be such an attraction that the ballet by Aruna Kalavidharu will be staged for the 775th time here on Tuesday night.Directed and produced by U K Arun of Aruna Kalavidaru, the show has achieved yet another record -- seventy-five shows in the last three months alone! A runaway success by all accounts.
But the show's main attraction, as far as Arun is concerned, are the seven dwarfs, one of whom is just 18 inches tall! Though the tale has already been popularised by Walt Disney and Warner Brothers on celluloid, it continues to be a creative challenge as a theatrical production, says the director.
The most difficult task, he says, was to present the reality hidden in the fantasy elements of the children's tale. ``Our only aim was to entertain both children and adults,'' he adds.
And,obviously he has succeeded. It is not only the longest-running show having been staged over the last 12 years but in the last three months, the show opened to a packed house on all 75 days. In Mangalore too, the show was performed five times a day -- to a full house for four full days.
Besides the script by former Kannada Sahitya Parishat Chairman Dr S S Murulaiah and music by L Vaidyanathan, the production also boasts of contribution by well known playback singers S P Balasubramanyam, Vani Jayaram and Ratnamala Prakash. Obviously the formula has worked. And how!
