Yayati scintillates

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Sept 22: Yayati Watwe struck twice after the change-over as Vincent's `A' edged out strong contenders The Bishop's School in a pool `A' under-14 match of the Inter-Schools Fr Barco Memorial football tournament at their ground here today.

After a barren first half, Yayati Watwe scored the goals in identical style with solo efforts, although, the second goal appeared to be off-side. Nevertheless, referee Fidelus Fernandes was the best judge as he was close to the ball.

Vidya Bhavan scored a consolation win over Don Bosco in a tie which had nothing at stake from Pool `C' as Loyola `A' have already booked their place in the knock-out stages. Sushant Chakravorty and Navel Fernandes were the scorers for the winners.

It was a clash of the Titans as Bishop's came up with some superb counter attacks against the hosts Vincent's. But for the first time clearance by the Vincent's foursome defence comprising of Allwyn Selvaraj, Seldon Vaz, Melroy Dias and Pratik Shinde and equally good anticipation by their 'keeper Sunil Albal, all Bishop's attempts turned out to be mere threats. Vincent's strike force of Vishal Rajput, Yayati Watwe, Hriday Sethi and Shahil Chordia were a real threat to the Bishop's defence.Yayati Watwe was in sparkling form. His speed and good ball control forced the rival defence on to the backfoot.

But they had to wait till the 29th minute to reap their harvest. Yayati Watwe latched on to the ball in the midfield and from top of the box slammed home with Bishop's keeper Prasanjeet Roy a mere spectator.

Yayati Watwe rounded off the tally with just a minute to go for the final whistle in a repeat of the first goal. Capitalising on the defensive lapses he turned back in one action to hit the target.

Thursday's fixtures: (all under-16) Vincent's `A' vs Vidya Bhavan 2 p.m; Vincent's `B' vs Bishops 3 p.m; Loyola `A' vs Ornellas 4 p.m.
