Gawli gangster killed in Pune

PUNE, SEPT 26: A gangster allegedly owing allegiance to the underworld don Arun Gawli was killed and two constables injured in an exchange of fire between the police and the gangster at Thergaon near here on Sunday.

Working on a tip-off that the gangster Namdev Hari Patil is leaving for Pune from Mumbai, a team of police officials led by Assistant Police Inspector (API) Vijay Salaskar of Anti Extortion Cell followed Patil's vehicle and intercepted it near Dange Chowk in Thergaon near Pimpri Chinchwad at 3.15 pm and asked him to surrender, police said.

The gangster opened fire on the police and in the return fire by the police, he was killed, according to police. Two police constables were also injured in the incident and were admitted to Sassoon hospital, police said.

Named among the top ten wanted gangster Patil was wanted in over 25 cases of murder and extortion including the murder of a former Shiv Sena MLC Ramesh More, builders Nathubhai Desai, Vallabh Thakker, Manish Shah, cable director RamPanjabi and others. An automatic pistol was recovered from the encounter spot and during the inquest panchnama conducted at the Sassoon Hospital, the police have recovered an identity card of the Mumbai police with Patil's photograph and his name given as Vasant Nana Deokar indicating that he used to pose as a police constable, Salaskar revealed.
