Clash over `public disgrace' of girl in Palasgaon, 31 held

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
AURANGABAD, SEPT 26: Police have arrested 31 villagers of Palasgaon in Sillod taluka of this district in connection with a clash that grew out of exposing a sixteen-year-old girl to public disgrace yesterday, according to police.

The police today said that Meera Prakash Shingare wrote a letter to the niece of prominent poet and Legislative Council member N D Mahanor, in which they alleged that Shingare used indecent language. Mahanor's brothers and some of their supporters stormed the house of the girl, blackened her face and exposed her to public disgrace. The other group, enraged by this act, took out a morcha in the village and pelted stones. This led to tension in the village.

Both the groups lodged complaints and counter complaints with the police. The situation in the village is now peaceful, the sources added.

Mahanor had received threats two years ago and the issue was raised in both the Houses of the Legislature. Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde had visited the village and appealed to thevillages to maintain a peaceful atmosphere in the village.
