1 crore smuggling racket -- Ghatkopar resident arrested

MUMBAI, SEPTEMBER 26: A key accused in the Rs 1.07 crore smuggling racket which was unearthed by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) last month, was arrested by DRI officials on Thursday night.

Suresh Shankarlal Mange, a Ghatkopar resident, was produced before the holiday court on Friday and remanded to judicial custody till Monday by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate C L Thool. He will be produced before regular court for further remand on Monday.

The remand application states that DRI officials found 50 bags of cardamom weighing 50 kilograms each, 126 cartons each containing 200 Panasonic video cassettes and 20 bags containing gentamycin sulphate each weighing 25 kilograms totally valued at Rs 73 lakh on searching a truck at . Purna village in Bhiwandi on August 26. Investigations revealed that the truck was smuggled into India from Nepal. The truck's cleaner Teja Singh is presently under judicial custody.

DRI officials then raided the godown of Ambica Storage where contraband goodscomprising 180 packets of torches and chemicals valued at Rs 30 lakhs were seized under a panchnama.

Proprieter of Ambica Storage, R S Yadav said that on August 25, a truck-load of foreign goods were off-loaded at his godown at the instance of Suresh Mange. No papers were, however, prepared for the said deposition. Yadav further stated that Suresh informed him that another truck of foreign origin would be coming the next day and the documents in respect of the goods would be given later. A loader at Ambica Storage, Mahadev Atugade said that a person named Suresh deposited 180 packets at the godown in the evening.

Mange, who was then summoned to the DRI office, stated that the seized goods were deposited in the godown at his instance and that he was aware that the goods were being deposited in the godown. Suresh also said that he had arranged for the storage and delivery of the goods for monetary consideration. DRI said in the remand that Suresh is one of the key members of an organised gang engaged in thesmuggling of goods, its storage and its distribution.
