PWD officials helped builders crush slums

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Sept 26: People's Union for Civil Liberties has urged the National Human Rights Commission to conduct inquiry into the demolition of houses in the slums of Gadkhol Padia of Ankleshwar in Bharuch district and initiate action against Public Works Department officials who allegedly connived with builders in the misdeed. In fact, a senior PWD official admitted that he had not given permission to demolish the houses.

The victims had alleged that they were not served any notice by PWD or any other department with regard to demolition and that their houses had been bulldozed by PWD officials in connivance with some local builders who had an eye over the costly piece of land.

The allegations certainly had some weight because goons associated with builders were seen guarding the land when this The Indian Express reporter visited the site on Septemeber 23. The fencing of the land, which was open on the side of the land belonging to the builders, also suggested foul play by builders and PWD officials.
