Three day Punjabi Sahit Sammelan from today

PATIALA, Sept 26: Punjabi University has decided to organise a multi-faculty millennium series of seminars and lectures and the series would take off tomorrow in the form of a national-level Punjabi Sahit Sammelan, Vice-Chancellor Dr Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia said here today.

Addressing a press conference, he said the Sammelan would be devoted to Punjabi language, literature and culture, the 21st century challenges and possibilities. The main objective of the Sammelan is to focus attention on the need for a cultural renewal in India, he added.

Over 500 experts from all over the country are expected to attend the seminar, which concludes on September 28. He said to counter the growing fashion towards "adulteration of Punjabi folk music" and other musical forms, authentic forms would be presented in a cultural program on September 28, under the auspices of the university Directorate of Youth Welfare in collaboration with the North Zone Cultural Centre. A poetic symposium is also scheduled.

Kartar Singh Duggal will deliver the keynote address at the inaugural session tomorrow. Former V-C Dr S.S. Johl will deliver the address at the valedictory session, to be presided over by Kurukshetra University Vice-Chancellor Dr M.L. Ranga. The papers presented at the seminars and the deliberations will be published in a book form for wider circulation. The seminar is being organised by the Department of Punjabi Development and Department of Punjabi.
