Kalyan pulls out due to `medical reasons'

Amit Sharma
LUCKNOW, SEPT 26: With just a week left for the final battle for 31 crucial Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, state Chief Minister and the BJP's lone star campaigner, Kalyan Singh, has pulled out of the campaign for the time being. The ostensible reason: Spondylitis.

It is not known when Kalyan Singh will resume his campaign but the fact is that the Chief Minister will not be able to make it to many of the constituencies. Kalyan Singh was not available for comment.

In the context of the ongoing group war in the state BJP, some seniors point out that it could not be a coincidence that the Chief Minister had to cancel his election meetings because his helicopter ran short of petrol once and could not take off because of bad weather a number of times.

For the first time, the Chief Minister did not campaign in a number of constituencies including his home turf of Aligarh and in Allahabad, from where the BJP stalwart Murli Manohar Joshi had sent feelers to request him to campaign for him. The BJP -- whichalong with its allies had bagged 60 seats in previous Lok Sabha polls -- is facing the worst challenge in these polls.

Groupism is at its peak among the party cadre and despite best efforts of senior party leaders at the Centre to sort out differences, there had been no improvement. Adding to the woes of party leaders is a record-low polling percentage in the first and second phase of polling in the state for 54 lok Sabha seats.

``All this bodes ill for the BJP. The state party leaders should have sunk personal differences during elections but bloated egos of the leaders have marred party's prospects. Damage has already been done and it cannot be checked at this moment when 54 seats have gone to polls and remaining 31 will be over by October 3,'' said a senior party leader.

Though Kalyan Singh has refused to comment on his alleged indifference, there have been enough instances that point in that direction. The Chief Minister had boycotted the tea party hosted by senior UP leader Lalji Tandon in honourof Atal Behari Vajpayee because he was not allowed to speak at an impromptu meeting after Atal Behari Vajpayee filed his nomination papers. He has also not commented on the open rebellion by his protege Swami Satchidanand Sakshi Maharaj for whose ticket he tried desperately but failed. Maharaj is moving in a helicopter arranged by the Samajwadi Party and is announcing everywhere that only Mulayam Singh and Kalyan Singh were the leaders of the backward classes and they would join hands after elections. He is also claiming that Kalyan would be removed once the elections were over.

``The Chief Minister of a state should tour to all the constituencies as Kalyan's counterpart in Madhya Pradesh Digvijay Singh has done. But Kalyan has confined himself to Lucknow. He must have realised that the BJP is losing ground and the Congress is on a comeback trail. After all the BJP's loss will be Congress's gain,'' said CLP leader Pramod Tiwari.
