Sugar imported from Sharif's kin - Congress

Prakash Dash
BHUBANESWAR, SEPT 26: The Congress party on Saturday alleged that about half the quantity of sugar imported from Pakistan by Indian Government agencies was from the Choudhury Sugar Mill and Ramjan Sugar Mill at Lahore, owned by a cousin of Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

The party also said that about 53 tonnes of sugar were imported from these two mills only after the Kargil intrusion to please Sharif and his close family members.

He said the BJP-led Government had imported a total of 1,18,000 tonnes of sugar after it assumed power at the Centre.

Addressing a press conference here, Sunil Shastri, secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC) and son of former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, said the BJP-led Government allowed the import of sugar from these two mills only to make Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's Lahore bus journey a success. He alleged that the Prime Minister wanted to be an international figure and a great diplomat and to please Sharif, he made a ``secretunderstanding'' with him. He also said that the Prime Minister's claim that no sugar was imported by Government agencies from Pakistan after February 25, 1998, was not true. He said that his party had ``documentary evidence'' of the import of sugar from these mills which are closely associated with Sharif.

Criticising the opinion polls aired by the Doordarshan (DD) and Star News recently, he said the predictions made were incorrect.

Shastri, who came here after making a whirlwind election tour of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Pondycherry, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab, said his party is now convinced that the exit polls are sponsored by the BJP to influence the voters.

He said the Congress is heading the pollls as the single largest party and would make ``substantial gains'' in Uttar Pradesh. He further said his party would make ``some improvement'' in Orissa, compared to the last general elections.
